A
ACOUSTICAL CORRECTION well-attended meeting at the Air Force Club was addressed by Mr. S.E. Faber, A.F.C., M.I.C.E., on the acoustical correction of the Loke Yew Hall in the University, and by Mr. Alan Fitch, A.R.I.B.A. on some of the problems and the way in which they had been overcome in designing the acoustic treatment of the Concert Hall in the new City Hall.
Reporting this in its latest bulletin, the Hong Kong Society of Architects says Mr. Faber illustrated his talk by recordings made of sounds at dif- ferent frequencies in the Loke Yew Hall before the alterations were car- ried out, and he described in interest- ing detail most of the calculations made to show the correction
re-
quired. The basic need was to cor- rect the shape of the hall, and this was achieved by the construction of a new ceiling.
The design of the Concert Hall in the City Hall presented entirely different problems, and Mr. Fitch described some of the agonies endured in attempting to reconcile his own aesthetic needs with the mathematical requirements of the acoustics consultant, the practical needs of the air-conditioning en- gineers who produced extract fans in unexpected places at the last minute, and the requirements of the Urban Council, which were all- embracing.
