Textiles, Tyre Re- pairs. Carpenters, Electricians, Bat- tery Shops and the Engine and Sub- Assembly Shop with adjoining Engine Test House; there are also a Tool Store and a Safe Custody Store. The Bench Fitting. Welding and Tinsmith Shops are located in the main aisle at the north end of the building ad- jacent to the Mechanical Plant (or Gantry) Shop; the siting of these Shops in this area, together with the Machine Shop, effectively centralises the general engineering side of the work as distinct from the vehicular side.

The operating procedure for the general servicing and maintenance of Government's fleet of motor vehi- cles is that they are called in on a roster once every month for a general Inspection and lubrication and for effecting any minor repairs or adjust- ments that may be necessary; this will be carried out at the Vehicle Inspection Pits and Servicing Area along the front of the Shop which will be cleared daily and any vehicles requiring major repairs which can not be cleared the same day will be

taken into the Main Repair Section inside the Shop. The Vehicle Inspec- tion Pits, 8 in number, are all inter- connected as are the two pits for lubrication over which the vehicles are driven on completion of their inspection and servicing. The ad vantage of pits for both maintenance and lubrication services is that work can be carried out simultaneously underneath and on top of the vehi- cles with a consequent speeding up of the work.

canopies, the Tyre Shop attends to the vulcanizing of inner tubes and general inspection and replacement of tyres, while the Instrument Shop takes care of the testing, calibration and overhauling of instruments,

In the Mechanical Plant Section, bulldozers, road rollers, excavators. air compressors, etc., together with such miscellaneous items as diesel engined generating sets ranging in size from 3 K.W. to 85 K.W., water pumps, and, in general. all equip- ment which is mechanically operat- ed, are repaired and overhauled. The Bench Fitting Shop is the "jack of all trades" of the workshops and caters for all general engineering work including steam and hospital equipment and it is in this Shop that the majority of new equipment ranging from Traffic Pagodas and Bollards to workshop toolboxes are fabricated. The Machine Shop is comprehensively equipped with a wide and varied assortment of ma- chine tools which are necessary to handle the extremely varied range of work for which the Electrical and Mechanical Office is responsible.

The new workshops will permit all these multifarious activities to be and scientifically systematically handled with the maximum effi- ciency and minimum expenditure of time and effort.

The only section of the existing Mechanical Workshops which will not be housed in the building now under construction, is the Paint Shop, which is planned as a separate building to be erected in Stage II: it will be designed to accommodate up to 10 vehicles at a time together with the steady stream of equipment, in- cluding domestic appliances, coming out of the Mechanical and Electrical Workshops after reconditioning and requiring painting and will be equip- ped with a ventilation system for the extraction of polluted air.
