The practice of mixed classes in secondary schools largely arose through shortage of school places in the post-war period. The subsidised and private primary schools are over- whelmingly co-educational and SO also are the private secondary schools. There still remains much to be done to develop the private mixed second- ary schools into true co-educational establishments, however. The girls in such schools are often handicap- ped compared with those who attend girls' schools, where provision is made for their special needs. On the other hand, there are indications, in the success of dramatic and similar activities, that co-education could have its rightful place in the second- ary stage.
