A view of the Apartment Block above May Road,

The Douglas Apartments designed for Humphreys Estate & Finance Co., Ltd, by Mr. A. V. J. Alvares of Credit Foncier d'Extreme Orient, and one of the most up-to-date residential buildings in the Colony, has been completed, and affords very welcome accommodation to the families who now occupy the twenty flats which this very attractive seven-storey building contains.

Last year two properties were purchased by the company on Peak Road adiacent to their other properties in that dis- trict. On one of these lots there is a block of fats known

as “Luginsland," whilst on the other the Douglas Apartments are located.

The site on Peak Road is the highest yet developed on the select Mid Level area. It was chosen for its unique position, delightful outlook and accessibility to the city, at a level which will ensure extra coolness during the hot months while escaping the fog belt which so often covers the Peak.

The main front facade of this building presents a most pleasing composition to the eye. The building which has been designed to incorporate the best of modern architectural planning is symmetrical about a central panel extending prac- tically the full height of the building and formed by projecting and framing the two-roomed apartments which have been placed in the centre of the front part of the building.

This central panel effect is emphasized by the line and depth of the living room verandahs of the apartments which extend horizontally on either side of this central portion and by the line of the pent house roof gardens the veranoans of which extend over it and become the top border.

No attempt has been made to use coloured or contrasting materials to the exterior of the building except for the green colour paint on the window sections. The entire wall finish is in ordinary stippled cement plaster painted of one colour with light cream "Snowcem," the architect relying entirely upon the proportions and the positioning of his architectural features to give individuality and character to the appearance of the building.

The disposition of the apartments on the ground and first floors is about a central lift hall which gives access to the two-roomed apartment already mentioned, by a doorway opposite the lift and to the two large apartments by a door on either side of the hall.
