The roof slab is in situ Truscon, with suspended ceilings in Hy Rib plastered, or cement rendered with Acousti-Celotex tiles.
The ceilings to corridors, and all 'noisy' rooms have been finished in Acousti-Celotex tiles.
The general elevational treatment is influenced by the fenestration. In order to obtain the maximum amount of light the windows span the full distance between columns. This arrangement dictated continuous sills and lintels, the columns forming pilasters on the external face between the windows. Relief was given to the Rotunda, and the angles of the office and laboratory wings by the use of "Glasscrete" wall lights which will be extended vertically when the first floor is added.
No effort was spared to make the interior and exterior finishes of the buildings as attractive and as durable as possible, the materials chosen being specially selected for their suitability and appearance.
All walls, where special protection was not required, were finished with high grade plaster. In the laboratory and the ablution block, Richards Clair-de-lune tiles were used for the dadoes and plaster above. The ceilings in the office wing, laboratory and dining rooms were covered with Acousti- Celotex tiles; in the entrance hall the fibrous plaster saucer dome was built with concealed lighting coves; elsewhere plain plaster was used.
The floors, of course, required special consideration and treatment. In the office wing and dining room Durablock tiles were used; in the laboratory Adamantive tiles with coves were laid for the special protection they afford, the same tiling being used in the changing rooms and showers, The floors of the kitchen and auxiliaries were paved with Richards Stubble Derrolite tiles, while the entrance hall received special treatment in the malt coloured machine cut mosaic which was laid therein with a central motif in coloured mosaic of a molecule of Isopropyl Alcohol,
In all buildings, the services are carried in sub-floor ducts and brought above floor level at positions required. These services consist of domestic hot and cold water, process water, compressed air, vacuum, gas, and electrical power. In the offices, canteen and ablution buildings a low pressure hot water system with Vectair radiators was supplied for heating purposes, whilst in the laboratory a Plenum heating system with separate extract system was installed, the air changes vary from 5 c.p.h. to 10 c.p.h. according to requirements.
The buildings formed one contract, and the work was carried out on a Schedule of Rates. The progress was satis- factory and only minor delays in delivery of heating and ventilating equipment occurred. It was not necessary to modify the original design, nor was it necessary to substitute other materials than those originally specified.
