metals locally to a high temperature, while the " 'dielectrie' losses can be used with non-conducting materials to bring about localised heating from
within.
This had led to a new technique known 15 high-frequency heating, offering innumerable new possibilities for the application of local heat gen- eration in industry, for the melting: hardening and soldering of metals, for the bending and gluing of wood, the dehydration of pharmaceutical products, the pre-heating of the material used in
the moulding of plastics. Since the end of the war Philips have been work. ing intensively on these new applica- tious of high-frequency currents, bene- fiting from their vast experience in the constructions of transmitters and the manufacture of transmission
valves.
Obviously an undertaking of the ex- tent of Philips aims at making itself as far as possible independent of out- siders and foreign sources for its sup plies. Thus there have sprung up in the complex of Philips factories at

these allied industries,

most of which are centered in Eind- hoven, one can understand how it is possible for 23,000 workers to find employment thero. We might quote here some figures from the develop- ment of the Philips works. In 1916, 25 years after its foundation, when Philips was turning out nothing else than in- candescent lamps, 3700 workers were employed and 40,000 sq. meters factory space was available. Now the space in use totals 400,000 sq. meters; about 25% of the floor space had been either destroyed or damaged during the war but reconstruction bas gone so well ahead that the whole of this space has been restored. Philips factories in other places of Holland are employ- ing another 12000 people and abroad in 25 countries about 45000 hands, s0 that the total personnel of all under- takings in the Philips Concern at the present day can be put at around 80,000.
When the schemes for reconstruction in Europe, both economic and political, are materialised this big industry may be expected to fulfill its part in the interests not only of everyone con- nected with it but also of the whole eivilised world.
