normal temperatures can be effected without danger of cracking the brick, and allows them to be handled by the labourers for transfer to storage. In this kiln the bricks are kept at the maximum temperature firing zone for a period of from one to two hours de- pending upon the type of brick being made. Ordinary high grade building brick remains for one hour in this zone, in which case the total travelling time through the kiln is 36 hrs. Wher

special grades are being manufactured, such as fire-brick, they remain in this firing zone for 2 hours, in which case it takes 72 hrs, for the car of brick to complete its journey.

The storage yard for the finished brick is situated on the banks of Castle Peak Bay some distance from the brick works proper. The finished bricks, after leaving the sorted and transferred to trucks and are drawn to the brick

storage yard by electrically operated continuous cable which returns a11 empty truck for every loaded one sent down.

The brick works are situated at the foot of Castle Peak quite some dis- tance from the main road and conse- quently are not served by the China Light & Power Company cables in the district. The power required to operate the fans and blowers, the brick-making machinery, cableway, and the light in- stallation is obtained by a petrol-power- ed (0) kw. generator.

In addition to the ordinary building brick, the company manufacture a very fine grade of fire-brick which consists ci specially selected and processed clay and fired in the extra high tem- perature zones of the oil-burning kiu. Roofing, quarry and facing tiles are also manufactured which require special mixes of clay and special heat

treatment.

We have previously mentioned the fact that very fine clay suitable for pottery is obtained on the company's property, and in point of fact, they are producing a number of designs of pots and vases, hand made on potter's wheels, and glazed in a wide variety of colours.
