Singapore tidies up beauty Spot to attract tourists

THE Singapore Government

is

making determined efforts to increase the amount of tourist traffic to the State. Singapore has not, of course. the natural scenic beauty of Hong Kong. but nevertheless, the city has some very real natural ad- vantages which. in the past. it has been slow to exploit.

One of the most obvious of these is Mount Faber, the 345-foot nigh hill which dominates Singapore and commands a magnificent view over the city, harbour and surrounding islands. This has always been શ tourist attraction but until recently, very little had been done to provide

adequate facilities for visitors to the summit. The road at the top was narrow and congested, making turn- ing and parking diflicult. and it petered out amid an untidy huddle of soft-drink stalls. without proper shelter. seating or toilet facilities.

In August 1963. a development plan was announced which will eventually transform the slopes and summit of Mount Faber into a well laid out national park. The first phase involved tidying up the summit just below the existing telecommuni- cates station (which is a restricted areal, widening the road, providing a turning circus and parking space for cars. building observation hays
