1961-62 figure of $274,576,782 to $362.838.826. This is a little less than in 1960-61 when the figure reached a record of $395 millions: but it is probably true to say that more money was spent on new build- ing work in 1962-63 than in the previous year. for many large pro- jects in the course of construction were not completed by the end of the year and the costs were not included in this figure.
"In the field of domestic ac comodation. this increased activity in building can be guaged from the following figures of buildings in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Kowloon certified for occupa- tion during the last six years.

"These figures do not include new accommodation provided by Govern ment financed and special bodies such as Co-operative Building Socie ties and low-cost housing agencies. and accommodation provided by certain large utility companies for their own employees. Thus it will be seen that the amount of accom- modation provided in the private sector shows a considerable increase over the previous two years and brings the total up to the peaks achieved in 1958-60.
"The large amount of accom- modation provided in the years 1958-60 resulted in a general easing of rents in most classes of domestic accommodation so that. should the pattern be repeated. the outlook in this respect is encouraging and by the end of the year there were in fact positive signs of an easing of the up- ward rental movement in certain classes of accommodation.
