All the floors are of inch concretes slabs, finished with cement render ing as a temporary measure.

It is planned later on to surface the floors with special mastic asphalt.

On the ground floor are 12 inch x 12 inch columns at 21 feet centres and transversely at 13 feet. 18 feet and 13 feet centres.

There is a clear span in the drive- way of 18 feet and the middle isle. is 12 feet wide. with the parking bays on either side. Parking is diagonal.

On the first floor there are ver- tical concrete fins, 3 inch x 12 inch at 12 inch centres all round. with openings for the entrance and exit

ramps.

the

The first floor has separate ramps for entrance. on one end of building and exit on the other. For the top floor due to site difficulties there is only one ramp. 20 feet wide. providing for entrance and exit.

Small cars can make a “U” turn on the top floor and bigger cars have to reverse once to move out.

The entrance ramp gradient to the first floor is one in seven as it has been found from experience gained in other countries that mo- torists prefer a steeper entrance and a flatter exit. The other ramps are not as steep.

Railings of rectangular hollow steel tubes skirt the top floor round, with an opening for the en- trance exit ramp.

The parking bays are provided with 3 inch x 3 inch concrete emer- gency wheel stops.

On the outside of the building, 6 inch x 6 inch curbs are provided all round.

In the event of a car crashing through the fins, the impact force will be transferred to the slabs and not to the columns as the slabs have greater impact resistance in the horizontal plane.

The design load follows conven- tional British and American prac- tice i.e. 80 lbs. per square foot in the parking areas and 100 lbs. per square foot in the driving isles. This enables the heaviest cars to be accommodated in the building.
