RECLAIMING

WANCHAI

SEASHORE

PLANNED

THE HONG KONG Government is examining the feasibility of reclaiming a large area of the fore shore and seabed off the densely populated district of Wan Chai.

The proposed reclamation, cover. ing about a hundred acres or more, may extend roughly along a line from the east arm of the Naval Dockyard tidal basin to the cause. way to Kellett Island. If carried out, it will be bounded on the sea ward side by a rubble mound and seawall nearly a mile long.

It will provide a large area for the dumping of excavated material from both private and Government projects. It may be used for this purpose for several years before it! is filled to the required level. Part of the reclaimed land may then be used for the waterfront road to be built as an extension of Harcourt) Road.

According to a report received by the Public Works Department from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in the United', Kingdom, the proposed Wan Chai reclamation will not seriously affect tidal flow in Victoria Harbour.

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Reseacrh began investiga tions about two years ago at the Hydraulics Research Station al Wallingford, in Berkshire, England. to ascertain the effects of proposed and possible future reclamations on tidal streams in the harbour.

To help in the research, a work- ing model of the harbour WES specially built by the Research Station on information supplied by the Public Works Department in Hong Kong.
