After the liberation it was OC- cupied by the Royal Navy but was bought at an auction by Hong Kong Realty & Trust Co., Ltd. for $1,375, 000. The present developers, The Fulton Corporation, Ltd.. acquired the site from Hong Kong Realty & Trust Co., Ltd. by private treaty.

The new Grenville House will con- sist of nine storeys and penthouses above ground floor car ports.

In addition to four penthouses. each equal in size to two apartments, there will be 9 four bedroom flats, each of 2.774 sq.ft.. 36 three bed- room flats of 2,500 sq.ft., 18 two bedroom flats of 2,106 sq.ft. and 9 bachelor flats of 1.321 sq.ft.

A new access road, formation of which is now in progress, has been designed, the former road being inadequate to cater for the greater traffic. The existing road will be used for pedestrians only.

All servants wings are located at the rear, and there is thus no inter- ference with the view from the view from the balcony of each apartment. In order to take greatest advantage of this, the main living rooms in all

cases have their longer dimensions facing the harbour. Light wells have been eliminated from the design.

Construction to satisfy the require- ments of the architects presents a major engineering problem, and W. V. Zinn & Associates, a leading British firm of consulting engineers. have been engaged to prepare the structural design.

The use of flat slab construction has enabled all beams to be eliminat- ed, and cross walls have been used throughout to carry wind pressures. The first floor slab is supported on 16-foot high 'A' frames, giving suffi. cient height for lorries to have access directly to all parts of the ground floor.

The pattern of the facade has been designed to satisfy two basic require- ments; the need for a canopy to shade every window, and the need for openings for air-conditioners that will not be affected in appearance by the installation of a diversity of units, and which will enable floor to ceiling curtains to be used in every

room.

The cost of the building. land and site formation are expected to amount to some $8,000.000.

THE NEW TUNG TAU Resettlement Estate, now going up in Kow- loon City, has seven- storey blocks of a new design which gives the buildings a cleaner out- line and makes them aesthetically more pleas ing than the "H" block introduced in 1953.

Staircases are re-sited inside the wings of the block on the courtyard side and the panels at the side of the staircases have been filled with hollow block screens which keep the interrup tion of air flow into the courtyard 'to a minimum.

Four extra rooms, each with private balconies, are provided at the end of the block on each floor.
