operators, the meteorology and air information services, the Royal Air Force and Joint Air Traffic Control Centre, telecommunications and pub. lic works departments.
The administration block is six storeys high, the telephone exchange one storey and the control tower rises to nine storeys.
Construction is of reinforced con- crete framed structure with brick in- fills and timber partitions. It is designed on a grid of 3 feet 2 inches inches and 1 foot 6 inches with the aim of giving flexibility to the ar- rangement of internal partitions to divide up rooms and offices.
Practically the whole building is air-conditioned and the air-condition. ing ducts are concealed in the ceiling of each floor.
A system of sunbreakers consisting of "Filon" plastic sheets, aluminium fins and "Naco" louvres is intro- duced on the longitudinal facades to cut down the glare of the sun.
External walls are rendered with granolithic chippings in white ce- ment and washed down. They are laid in panels with threequarter-inch grooves to imitate slab walling.
At other places the wall finishes range from sandfaced bricks in cream coloured mortar joints to Tyrolean plaster rendering.
Several types of asbestos cement blocks are also used for screen walls to staircases and landings. blocks have also been used.
Glass
Floor finishes internally are par quet to all offices; terazzo tiles and terazzo-in-situ rendering in corridors, stairs and stair landings; mosaic tiles and white glazed tiles to toilets and showers; quarry tiles to work-
shops and battery cement rendering to stores, plant and machinery rooms
