External staircase

A T-shaped plan was adopted for the building as being desirable in re- lation to the overall urban design. It provides a pleasant green space along busy Kwun Tong Road and gives a strong ending to the street before reach- ing the Tsui Ping Road corner.

The size of the main block, the design of the external sculptural stair- case which wraps around a slim rectan- gular column, and the colour chosen for the facades were consciously related to the adjoining site, a hostel for ado- lescents. The main elevation of this adjoining building looks out over the site and the plan form chosen minimises obstruction to it.

In addition the T-shape separates the quiet activities of the centre (ad- ministrative, medical, educational, so- cial, counselling, audiometric, speech- therapy, etc.) in the head of the T, from the workshops in the body of the T. The link between the two wings is the entrance and vertical circulation space. As the site is almost square, an area is left on either side of the build- ing for car parking and garden.

Total floor area of the building is 43,000 sq. ft. and total volume, 580,000 cu. ft. The general planning is to a 4 ft. module to give a flexible
