The new gaol in the International Settlement in Shanghai. The light wells in the arms and centre of the cross plan permit extensive supervision of all floors; they are screened over with expanded metal netting

for the prisoners. Flat roofs and covered and open compounds on the ground give the convicts all necessary room for their daily physical exercise. Naturally, all up-to-date safety measures have been installed.

In the centre of the male division block is a glass dome which consists of thick glass roof tiles between concrete ribs. Full light floods through open wells down to the bottom. An extensive system of expanded metal netting is provided over all open wells through which the guards can overlook several floors from one point.
