application of the system, structural efficiency requires a range of rectan gular frames, all 8 ft. high but ranging in width from 6 ft. to 16 ft. The components of the frames are so designed that the increase in the number of sizes gives little further difficulty in the prefabricating work- shop.

A second requirement of the theoretical design was

that the frames should be joined together as

far as possible without using addi- tional members such as mullions and corner posts. A method of fixing has been devised which makes this possible, so that the various buildings are constructed merely by placing the frames together and fastening them to one another with pins of a very strong timber. Thus the frames are solely responsible for bearing the building loads as well as supporting the cladding.

Using this method, it is hoped to produce the type of house shown in Fig. 4 for which the material would cost only about $800; when spread over a 14-year repayment period, this would require a rent well within the means of the lowest income groups.
