building is serviced by six lifts which, together with the five lifts in the earlier portion, makes a total of eleven lifts for the building, all supplied by the British General Electric Co., Ltd.

The building is constructed on a struc- tural steel frame skeleton, and it is worthy of note that in spite of its 14 storeys of height, the dimensions of the lowest and heaviest columns are only 18" x 18", in- cluding the necessary fire protection casing of concrete.

The external wall facings are of pre-cast terrazzo slabs 2" thick, bonded and tied to brickwork backing.

THE STEEL FRAMING

The complete building which was erect ed in two phases contains 2,700 tons of steelwork.

In all, the building contained 207 stan. chions which were delivered in 1,163 separate lengths. Phase I having 96 stan chions delivered in 636 lengths and phase I having stanchions delivered in 527 lengths, the longest stanchion being ap- proximately 180 feet long, delivered in 9 pieces.

All stanchions sit оп steel slab bases. the maximum stanchion load being 604 tons and the thickest slab base being 4' thick. The pitch of rivetting on all com- pound stanchions is closed at the base and splices and at all points of concentrated load such as occurs at floor levels from incoming floor beams.

The cost of tungsten fittings is consider- ably less than that of good quality fluore- scent fittings, and after consultation with the China Engineers, Ltd., a standard fit- ting was used throughout the offices to give approximately 10 lumens per sq. ft. over the entire office space.
