CHAIN SAW
A chain saw with a new shock absorbing suspension designed to eli- minate the health hazard caused by constant vibration has been designed by a British firm, Danarm, Ltd., Slad Road, Stroud, Glos.
The saw has rubber blocks for engine mounting and a handle bar on a three point spring fixing. It is powered by a 12 lb (5.4 kg) dry engine.
Suitable for felling and snedding, the saw is fitted with a dual automatic (adjustable) and manual system for chain and cutter bar lubrication. It also has an easily cleaned air filter with an oversize flock screen, and ball and needle crankshaft bearings to absorb heavy loads with the minimum of wear and friction. The oil and petrol tanks

give up to 40 minutes continuous cutting time and a separate cylinder head is fitted for ease of de-coking.
The controls consist of a trigger type throttle (with part throttle but- ton for starting), a positive butterfly choke system, a cut-out toggle switch and a manual oiling button. The rear handle contains a rubber insert for extra comfort and the main handle has a sure grip sleeve.
VIBRATORY ROLLERS
Under an agreement with the West German company, Freidrich Stein- kuhle AG, Aveling-Barford Ltd., Grantham, UK, are manufacturing a new range of Barford-Fristein double drum vibratory rollers.
These operate on a patented 'double vibration' principle in that,
mounted above each drum, is a rotat- ing shaft fitted with an eccentric weight, the centrifugal force from which induces vibration in the roll.
The eccentrics are phased so that roll vibrations neutralise each other in

all but the vertical planes and so that as one roll is on the ground, the other is clear. Thus maximum compactive force is brought to bear twice in each revolution of the vibrating shafts.
For travelling each drum has an individual chain drive from a single speed forward/reverse gearbox that incorporates a multiple-disc clutch running in oil. If one chain breaks, the machine still remains under control.
Power is supplied by single-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine of 6.5 b.h.p. in the ZV1 (4,409 lb. compaction force) or 8 b.h.p. for the ZV2 (8,818 lb.).
All three models are pedestrian controlled and the steering drawbar has a safety lever that automatically disengages reverse gear if the operator backs into a wall or obstruction.

ADJUSTABLE RIPPER Caterpillar have introduced adjustable ripper for use with the D8H tractor. It is available with two heavy- duty hydraulic adjusting cylinders, or with manually adjustable solid top links. The ripping angle can be varied up to 28 degrees with the hydraulic cylinders or 10 degrees with the manually adjustable links.

ders, the hydraulic control system permits the operation of both the lift circuit and the adjusting circuit from the common supply of high pressure oil. A single lever operated through an H-pattern controls both circuits.
The 8D offered in three arrange- ments: single shank, single shank deep ripping and multi-shank. A hydraulic pin puller, which allows the operator to change the shank depth without leaving his seat, is standard on the single shank deep arrangement.
RECLAMATION SYSTEM
Continuous Reclamation is the name given to a system divised by Kobe Steel, Ltd., Daiichi Tekko Build- ing, 1, 1-chome, Marunouchi, Chiyoda- ku, Tokyo, that can carry and spread unloaded soil and pebbles continuous- ly by combination of conveyors and spreaders.
The first such equipment, to be completed soon for the construction of a huge man-made island in Kobe Port, will consist of three shift con- veyors, a tripper, a stacker, a crawler conveyor, a spreader and accessories.
The equipment will require only eight operators and will be capable of treating 5,000 tons of soil per hour, the equivalent of 40 eight-ton dump trucks. It is being applied to expand reclaimed land to form the 4,220,000 sq. metre Port Island.
POWER TRUCK
With a full load, a new pedestrian operated power dumper truck will travel at up to 5 m.ph. either forward or reverse, and will work through mud or over rough sites.
It can carry up to 896 lb. and is powered by a 3% or 4 h.p. motor fed from a half-gallon petrol tank. Throt- tle and disc brake controls are located on a cross bar at the end of a tubular steel tiller handle. The light dumper body lifts back easily by means of a cantilever action type arm. The tipping position is supported by two stops at the rear which come into operation before the load is ejected.
