School has off-form frame

ARCHITECTURALLY, the St. Joseph's College Primary School, at Wanchai, Hong Kong, is conceived as a complete expression of its structural framework. The reinforced concrete beams and columns are exposed fair- face and are unpainted, the only finish applied being two coats of silicone waterproofing.

This honest expression of the con- struction is carried to the extent that there is no camouflaging of the con- crete joints and board marks, which are left as features in the concrete.

Generally, evenly spaced, uniform 4 in. widths of formwork were em- ployed. Different lengths of board were allowed, though the contractor was in- structed to stagger the ends as much as possible. Different lifts of concrete pouring were also planned and are em- phasised by recessed joints.

built for the Christian Brothers to com- plement the St. Joseph's College in Kennedy Road, Hong Kong. The clients called for a modern building with am- ple light and ventilation and requiring the minimum of maintenance. The use of fair-face concrete, while initial- ly only minimally cheaper than a plas ter and paint finish, will considerably reduce maintenance costs.

general purposes, staff rooms, office, caretaker's quarters and a car park for six cars. To these were added, at the clients' own expense, a hall to seat 350, a chapel and quarters for the Brothers.

The site has an area of 24,338 sq. ft. and is situated at the junction of Queen's Road East and Wood Road, with a right of way on the third side. and a waterworks depot on the fourth. Though the site itself is basically level, the ground slopes steeply down to it from Queen's Road East and from the top of Wood Road which are some 25 ft. above the main level. Queen's Road East is also some 25 ft. above the lower level of Wood Street. Advantage
