GROUND COMPACTOR

Taikyoku Construction Machinery Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Takaishi Building, 16-14, 5-chome, Ueno, Taito-ku, Tokyo, have produced a ground compactor that will tamp at

the rate of 500-700 t.p.m., covering an area of between 150 and 230 metres in an hour.

The machine is highly manoeuvr- able and can be converted into vertical vibration simply by altering the engine revolution; this assures high-speed ramming with automatic inching.

The two-cycle 98cc engine which is located in the centre of the machine for good balance, is equipped with safety protectors, shock absorbers and a bellow type sleeve rubber dust cover.

The foot stand is of polythene to guard against temperature variation and humidity.

Weighing 81 kgs., the compactor is sold with a specially designed carrier for easy transportation on site. Its impact is said to be comparable with a 6 to 8-ton roller.

GRADER

Aveling-Barford Ltd., UK, and AB Scania-Vabis, Sweden, have co-opera- ted to produce a powerful all-wheel drive motor grader known as the Super 500.

Maximum output of its DS 11 engine at 2,200 r.p.m. is 260 b.h.p. gross, automotive rating. Directly coupled to the engine is a Clark 15:1 torque converter, yielding a torque of 1,020 lb./ft. at 850 r.p.m. at 70 per cent. torque converter efficiency. Pow- er is transmitted through a 17in. di- ameter Borg and Beck dry plate clutch to a gearbox which provides a rever- sing speed of 18 m.p.h.

The cab is a walk-through, flat floor design, which has full sound and thermal insulation, seats for operator and mate, and halved doors on both sides. Screen washers and wipers are fitted to both front and rear windows. Rubber mountings ensure that the cab is isolated from vibration.

Hydraulic steering is operated by a separate circuit, a twin hydraulic steer ing pump being driven directly by the engine. Positive, fade-free braking is provided by an air/hydraulic system, with disc brakes on all four wheels.

The 12ft. long mouldboard is lin. thick and has special Z-section steel reinforcement at the rear. Operating weight of the grader is 36,400 lb.

POWER SHOVEL

A Kubota Atlas hydraulic power shovel with extra long reach, model AB-1700, is being marketed by Ku- bota Ltd., 22 Funade-Cho 2 chome, Naniwa-ku, Osaka, Japan.

The maximum reach is 8.9 metres and the work range can be changed eight different ways by setting two pins; it can be set for various con- ditions, such as narrow areas or wide, deep areas. The lift angle of the bucket can be set at either 183 degrees or 135 degrees.

Slopes of up to 29 degrees can be climbed by the machine which has crawler shoes controlled by hydraulic pressure.

For hard digging a maximum of 250 kg per sq. cm. hydraulic pressure is available. For lighter work less. power can be used for a shorter cycle time. The power unit is an 80 h.p., six-cylinder, air-cooled diesel engine.

With only two levers four different operations can be carried out: arm extension and retraction, revolving, boom operation and bucket manoeuvr- ing. Arm extension and retraction and revolution can be done simultaneously with the left hand, and boom and bucket operations simultaneously with the right hand.

TRUCK CRANE

The hydraulic P & H model T600 hydraulic truck crane, claimed to be the biggest of its kind, is now being made by Kobe Steel Ltd., Tekko Building, 1-chome, Marunouchi, Chyoda-ku, Tokyo.

The model has a maximum boom length of 32 metres and is capable of lifting up to 60 tons. It weighs 56 tons and has a maximum travelling speed of 40 kilometers per hour. Its controls permit five manoeuvres at once.
