Well-known architects from 13 nations gathered in Lima, Peru earlier this year, prior to submitting designs in com- petition for an experimental low-cost housing project spon- sored by the United Nations.

World interest in Peru housing experiment
THE experience gained from an ex- perimental low-cost housing project to be carried out by the Government of Peru and the United Nations is ex- pected to produce applications for many other countries, particularly those in South East Asia.
Primary aim of the project, to be developed in Lima over a period of three years through the sponsorship of the United Nations Development Pro. gramme (Special Fund), is to bring about 'new approaches and techniques in the field of urban housing for low-income groups'.

petition. An international jury convened recently to consider the designs and an exhibition of all the projects submitted will shortly be available on loan to other countries, after being on view in Lima.
The 'Experimental Housing Pro- ject' involves three pilot schemes in three main areas of low-income urban housing. The first pilot scheme is for the design and construction of a group of houses with emphasis on the de- velopment of new and improved building methods. These designs will be based upon projects selected from the international competition.
A second pilot project is to develop techniques for extending the func-
tional life span of existing older houses by the rehabilitation of individual dwellings and their community en- vironment.
The third pilot project is to de- velop techniques for establishing new settlements for families with very limited financial resources by pro- viding sites, basic services and facili- ties, and assisting families to build their dwellings with help and mutual aid.
Each project will be carried out by a development group consisting of architects and other specialists. The three pilot schemes will be located in different areas of Lima and their im- plementation will have related but
