Besides the flats for the handicapped other facilities, such as sauna bath and a table-tennis hall, feature special equipment. The entire build- ing has been designed with a view to facilitating a maximum of unobstructed mobility for the hand- icapped both inside and outside the centre.

For communication between the two storeys of the self-service store, the designers have chosen passenger conveyors of the Sandvik Steel Works' Movator type. The two conveyors have a speed of 36 metres per minute, the steel bands being covered with grooved rubber. Passenger conveyors have proved particularly suitable for those handi- capped who use sticks or crutches or move around in wheelchairs.

Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul opened

The 200-bedroom Inter-Continental Hotel, Ka- bul, was officially opened last month.

Representing one of he first major steps in the development of tourism in Afghanistan and the first enterprise of its kind in the country, it has been built to international luxury standards 6,000 ft. up in the foothills of Hindukush mountains, for the Malimah Pall Hotel Company.

The Inter-Continental's fully air-conditioned accommodation provides for over 400 guests in residence, with a private bathroom to each bed- room. Public rooms include a banqueting hall to seat 500, also to be used as a ballroom and to cater for conferences, exhibitions and lectures. Other

Over 1,000 Afghan workers, together with British supervisory and specialist personnel, were employed in the construction, which was carried out by a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow of Afghanistan and Afghan Construction Unit Kabul. Consulting architects were Paton, Pitt & Associates; mechanical & electrical engineers, John Harvey & Partners; and resource planning, Engineer Planning and Resource Ltd.
