Singapore buildings need local identity

The hope that as development progressed there would be architectural designs that could be identi- fied as uniquely Singapore's own was expressed by the Minister for Law and National Development, Mr. E.W. Barker, when he addressed the annual gathering of the Singapore Institute of Architects last month.

Architectural designs were the first visible im- pressions a visitor got of any city and its inhabitants, he said. The buildings in Singapore tended to show an efficient, frugal and hard working people.

There were buildings that were commendable, he added. But some of the housing and blocks of flats had designs that were far from imaginative.

Mr. Barker said there would be a "golden oppor- tunity" ahead for architects to take part in urban redevelopment schemes. More urban renewal sites for private participation would be offered soon.

Mr. Lim Chong Kiat, president of the institute, said he hoped that the School of Architecture and Building would be incorporated into a faculty of the University of Singapore this year.

This year the institute was to offer two research fellowships of S$4,000 each and two studentship scholarships of S$1,000 each. The institute had also been invited by the Board of Architects to organise an annual scholarship award of $2,500, provided by the board for post-graduate studies and travel to neighbouring countries.

HK Hotel symbol unveiled

A pair of stylised H's made up of brightly coloured triangles is to be the symbol of the new Hong Kong Hotel (Far East Builder, September 1968).

Mr. Henry Steiner, managing director of Graphic Communication Ltd., which is responsible for the hotel's graphic designs, said that though the symbol

was designed in orange and yellow it could be printed in black and white and could be reproduced flat or in relief without any change of its basic appearance.
