section of soil samples secured from the field areas; and 5. to evaluate the performance of a model house made. with soil-cement building blocks.

Great promise

Observations and results to date in- dicate that the use of Portland cement to stabilise soil such as that encounter- ed at the MSU campus has great pro- mise. On the model house, the cost of materials for the soil-cement blocks has been approximately one third that of a standard concrete construction.

The model house is 22ft. x 22ft. on plan and 8ft. high. It has four rooms. and a bath. The total cost of construc- tion, including all materials, the build- ing blocks, plumbing and labour was P2,500. On a self-help basis the cost could be reduced to less then P1,700.

The research project is headed by Mr. George B. Padilla and Mr. Vin- cente Alferez of the Department of Civil Engineering, with the university architect, Mr. Cresencio Benitez and Prof. Louis J. Goodman, Ford Foun- dation consultant, acting as technical advisers. The Eighth Division of the Bureau of Public Highways, Cagayan de Oro City helped with the installa- tion of the roadway and sidewalk sec- tions.
