closely with Mr. Jim Thompson on specially printed silks, one of which has been used as the main decorative in the hotel ballroom.

It is perhaps in the bedrooms, more than the public rooms, that a feeling of the national identity of the country is more important and for these, four different colour schemes have been

selected, each based on a distinct Thai colour arrangement. A special ceiling design of an antique Thai motif has been used with the idea that the travel- ler, on waking, will be made im- mediately aware of his presense in Bangkok.

The furniture is all solid Thai teak and the hardware has been developed along 18th century Thai lines. Suites are designed in the same spirit but are more elaborate and luxurious.

Planning

For the architects the major pro- blem in planning the layout was the limitations of the site which measures only 4250 sq. metres. This area has been completely developed over three levels; the basement contains night- club, shops and machine rooms, the ground floor - a wide lobby and lounge, bar, coffee shop and the ad- ministrative offices, and the first floor dining rooms, ballroom and swim- ming pool.

Above these, and along the main frontage rises nine floors in a slim tower containing 225 air-conditioned guest rooms and suites. Each room is equipped with four-channel stereo music system, telephone and bath- room and dressing room. The rooms are divided by a central corridor, one
