Hotel Nagoya seen across the castle moat

NAGOYA Castle, one of the most celebrated medieval castles in Japan, is now overlooked by a plush 11-storey hotel which rises by the west moat of the castle.

Designed by Takenaka Komuten, the Hotel Nagoya contains 254 rooms and is capable of accommodating 370 guests. It occupies 12,000 sq. metres of ground, with a total floor space of 28,000 sq. meters. There is a two- storey penthouse on top and one storey below ground.

The hotel is so designed that all guest rooms face eastward with a

direct view of the beautiful castle. Rooms on the first and 11th floors have extra large windows.

Among the features of the Y5,000 million hotel is a banquet hall on the second floor which can seat 3,000 people. Suitable for conferences it is complete with a stage and devices for simultaneous translation.

A unique observation elevator, which rides on a pair of rails recessed into an outer wall, carries guests from the ground level to the top-floor lounge. The elevator has floor-to- ceiling windows on three sides, en-

abling passengers to enjoy breath- taking views of the castle and its sur- roundings.

The hotel includes an outdoor swimming pool and swimming pool and a magnificent landscaped garden. About 100 paint- ings, including some by Picasso and other masters, decorate the restaur- ants, lobbies and halls.

The structure is of reinforced con- crete on prestressed concrete piles. Construction took 19-months - from April 1968 to October 1969 - and was speeded by the use of a 'press cast' method.
