were far more attractive than in pre- vious years and highlighting this new standard of design was the Hong Kong Government pavilion.

Basically, this was a space frame supported by four columns and sus- pended by a series of cables. The frame was made .of hollow wooden cylinders, with photographic displays placed along the lower portion of the cylinders. The idea was to integrate the structural elements with the dis- play materials. A colour code was used to identify the different themes.

Under the big display roof the space was completely open, possibly to symbolise that there is no barrier between the public and the Govern- ment.

The pavilion included one central information counter, plus interview rooms and a large round cinema. The interior surface of the cylinder above the cinema was used as the screen. There were three projection booths: one showed movies and the other two slides. The three projectors were used simultaneously to create a dramatic effect.

Theme for this year's pavilion was 'What Government does for you' and three major services were illustrated by means of photographs, charts and graphs. The three themes were: Social

Service, Law and Order and Rescue Service.

All the graphic works of the dif ferent departments were displayed along the interior surfaces of the same size cylinders and information person. nel from the different departments worked together within the same cir- cular counter, symbolizing inter- departmental unity.

The design was based on a modular unit of 4ft. x 8ft. plywood to simplify construction and cut down cost. The

With its architecture, graphics and structure conceived as one integrated

spatial entity, the pavilion illustrated that a most interesting and imaginative architectural design could be created within a tight budget.
