cum-seminar room with a fine view over Telegraph Bay.
The canteen is designed to seat 150 students at one sitting, and the kitchen facilities are capable of producing 300 hot meals of a variety of dishes over a lunch-time period. Access from the canteen is given to a lawn, where meals may be taken "al fresco”.
The accommodation is generally more tightly planned than is desirable. but the architect's instructions were to provide the maximum facilities for the funds available: this condition also limited the choice of finishes to those of a utilitarian nature. How- ever, to reduce maintenance costs, a large part of the exterior surfaces are covered with "Shanghai" type plaster. laid in panels.
Normal services are provided, with the kitchen equipped with gas-operat- ed equipment. Economy was exercis- ed in the provision of air-conditioning which is limited to the library, where the minimum requirements for com- fort and the preservation of books are allowed, to the faculty room and to certain offices. The main units are air-cooled.
Particular attention is given to the artificial lighting and sound control in the library reading room. The arti- ficial lighting is designed to give an illumination at table height of 30 lumens per sq. ft. and is obtained by

semi-direct flourescent fittings posi- tioned in relation to the reading tables.
The ceilings are suspended and consist of perforated light steel chan- nels lined with rock wool and black tissue paper, giving a reduction in reverberant sound level of approxi- mately 6 decibels, which is the maxi- mum that can be obtained econo- mically. The reverberation time assessed on the design criteria at 500 cycles per second is 0.9 secs.

The site was granted to the Uni- versity by Government and is shared with the Li Shu Fan Building. The part used for this building is mostly flat, and gave no particularly difficult foundation problems.
Bridge Link
The two groups of buildings are so arranged on the site that they may be linked together by a bridge when the additional floors are added to the library wing. Maximum space is thus available for car-parking. When Sassoon Road is widened and lowered. better access to the site will be obtain- ed than is at present possible.
