detectors, smoke detectors, CO sys- systems, flow switches, etc. and in- dicates on a graphic panel where the fire starts the signal originated, pumps accepts post signals from the fire watch in the area, and notifies the Fire Services, Kowloon of a fire on the terminal.

On each level except the car parks there are hydrants and hosereels. Both the hosereels and hydrants are so designed as to automatically cause an alarm on the main panel if used. In the high tension switch_room and transformer rooms there is an integrated automatic CO2

system. This system senses fire through a special rate of rise pneumatic system which stops the ventilation fans, closes the fire dampers, floods only the effect- ed space with CO2, and also causes an alarm signal on the main board.

The above is a very general de- scription of some of the facilities on the Ocean Terminal but does not truely convey the work and effort contributed by so many people and organizations. Everything associated with this project is astronomical in proportion. The following data may convey some idea of what is involved:

1. There are 59 air handling units and over 70 ventilating fans of various sizes.

2. There is over 29,000 ft. of steel pipe installed for the air-condi- tioning alone.

3. There is 7,500 ft. of cast iron

pipe installed for the sea water and air-conditioning alone not including the plumbing re- quirements,

4. There is over 1,675,000 yd. of conduit and wire and 100,000 yd. of cable installed.

5. The air-conditioned volume ex-

ceeds 3,600,000 cu. ft.

6. The substation has a low ten- sion capacity of 6.000 KVA which is equivalent to approxim- ately 5.100,000 watts (this will light up fifty-one thousand 100W light bulbs).

7. There are over 5.000 light fix-

tures of various types installed. 8. The consultants produced 482 M & E drawings for the project of which 397 were contract drawings. The balance being special details and special de- signs of lighting, equipment, etc. 9. Over 192,800 sq. ft. (approxim- ately 4.4 acres) of blueprints have been produced. Special mention

be made about the various M & E contractors. Working conditions and programme completion requirements on the pro- ject have been very severe. The suc- cess of the project depended largely on their co-operation and contribution.
