Professor Buchanan said it was no good expecting such trained personnel to work in a constant atmosphere of criticism. Town planning required the assistance of both civic authorities and property owners it demand- ed, in essence, tremendous co-operation between all in- terests.

ing standard building products and needing a minimum of maintenance.

Aluminium V-beam roofing is the structural element of the roof, which is said to be capable of withstanding wind loads of up to 120 m.p.h. The aluminium surface reflects heat, keeping the interior cool in winter.

The 750 sq. ft. two-storey interior is of pre-finished wood panelling. The upper floor has two bedrooms with storage space, and the lower floor contains a living room, kitchen, bath and storage. The living room opens to an

8 x 16 ft. sundeck.

Front and rear walls are of % in. pre-painted, al- uminium-plywood-foil laminate. The A-frame is support- ed by 12 concrete block footings with aluminium termite shields used at the junction with the flooring. Flooring is vinyl asbestos tiles, and insulation comprises 3 in. thick fibreglass battens with a foil vapour barrier.

Crisis in Italian Building Industry

IN the third quarter of 1965 the percentage of Italian contracting firms closing down rose from 19 to 25 per cent and some 37 per cent of the firms were reported to be working short.

Private enterprise dwellings worth about US$540 million remain unsold. It is estimated that this year's housing output will be 14 per cent below that of 1964 (260,000 dwellings).

Loans at a total value of US$1,080 million are to be offered to the purchasers of owner-occupied dwellings. A quarter of the sales price has to be put down as a deposit, the rest will be a loan repayable over 35 years,

The reason for the present crisis is the neglect of subsidised housing in recent years. In 1964 only 5.6 per cent of all constructed dwellings received state subsidies. In consequence the building industry concentrated luxury apartments, many of which are now standing empty.
