The work took about seven months and was carried out by Singapore contractors, Building Construction Co., Ltd., to plans drawn up by the Singapore Public Works Department in joint consultation with the Johore
Causeway Control Committee.
Opened in 1923, the causeway is 3,465 ft. long and the average depth of water in which it is laid is 47 ft. at low tide, maximum depth being 77 ft. It is constructed entirely of granite blocks,
As well as a main road and a single-track railway, the causeway also accomodates the pipelines carry- ing Singapore's main water supplies.
