A-Frame House

Use of asbestos cement materials demonstrated

A DEMONSTRATION house of unusual

design and construction has been erected at Auckland, New Zealand, to show the applications of locally made asbestos cement building materials.

The building, which may be used either as

home a

or holiday re- sidence, is based on a total of eight 9 in. by 3 in. triangular A-frames spaced at 6 ft. 4 in. centres wired to piers and supporting 5 in. by 2 in. floor joists at 18 in. centres. The outside measurement of each frame is 24 ft. by 24 ft. by 24 ft.

a

The general layout of the house comprises a main living floor space of 750 sq. ft., which includes lounge, kitchen, bathroom, two bed- rooms and a main entry area. Above the kitchen, bathroom and main entry area is a mezzanine floor of 180 sq. ft. This area can be extend- ed over the two bedrooms to give additional living space.

Covered Way

In addition, a shelter deck of 200 sq. ft. is situated in front of the lounge, and is intended for outdoor living. Access to this area from the interior is by two glass doors. A covered way, measuring 12 ft. by 6 ft., connects the house with 200 sq. ft. carport.

a

The external fin wall at the cover- ed way is lined with in. cement asbestos flat sheets showing the tex- tured face. Joints between adjacent sheets are made by using H-shaped aluminium extrusions and

mastic,

and perimeters of north and south panels are trimmed with 1 in. by

in. finished mitred bead.

Except where the kitchen roof light

occurs, the whole of the exposed internal surface of the roofing pur- lins is covered with 6 ft. by 3 ft. moulded sheets, the ends of which are neatly cut with a carborundum disc to finish a constant distance of half-an-inch clear of the rafters.

Ceilings below the mezzanine floor and the raking ceiling in the bath- room are lined with 3/16 in. cement

asbestos flat sheets, selected for even face texture, jointed, with joints covered with aluminium moulding.

Similar flat sheets, showing their plain face, are used for lining all the internal walls except below the windows at north and south ends of the buildings. They are fitted in 3 ft. or 4 ft. widths as required to give even joint spacings on walls. Alum- inium external angle mould is fitted to three joints at the entry, bathroom and first bedroom, H-shaped alum- inium extrusions being fitted between adjacent sheets.

Panels 1 ft. wide and in. thick, cover the close-boarded 5 in. by 2 in. deck joists cut between the A-frames and fixed on 4 in. by 2 in. bearers.

After purlins had been covered with wire netting and building paper. asbestos cement corrugated sheets were fixed by the mitre method with end laps of not less than 9 in. The architects for the house were Warwick and Wright, Auckland.
