VIBRATING ROLLERS

Two articulated, self-propelled vibrating rollers featuring high com- paction and mobility have been deve- loped by Stothert & Pitt Ltd., PO Box 25, Lower Bristol Road, Bath, UK.

One, the SP72, has a turning circle of 32 ft., an operating weight of 4 tons 2 cwt. and a roll width of 72 in. The other, (SP182) has a turning circle of 46 ft., an operating weight of 5 tons and a roll width of 79 in.

Both units are of conventional con- struction with the vibrating roller in front so that the propulsion unit operates over compacted ground. Each is powered by two engines a Ford

six-cylinder water-cooled engine deve- loping 115 bhp at 2500 rpm for pro- pulsion and a Lister air-cooled diesel for the vibrating power unit.

The use of two engines enables the propulsion unit to be fitted with a hydrokinetic transmission system. The two-speed power shift gearbox gives 0 4.5 mph and 4.5 8.5 m.p.h.

Vibration control is by means of a lanyard from the roller engine to the driver's cab.

CRANE

A wide variety of materials handl- ing and construction jobs can be handled by the Link-Belt YC-48 hydraulic crane.

Its features include power shift transmission and torque converter; six speeds forward and reverse; a turning radius of 18 ft; power hydraulic four-

wheel steering; a deep 20 ft. carrier main frame; hydraulic outriggers; and a rear axle lock for stability when lift- ing.

The YC-48 has a 360-degree con- tinuous swing on a turntable bearing,

and a speed-reduction unit equipped with spring-applied hydraulically re- leased swing brake which permits smooth acceleration and deceleration of the swing motion.

Power hydraulic boom raising and lowering is through two double-acting cylinders, each with integral check cylinders, each with integral check valve. Single line pull is up to 7,180 lb. and single line speed 248 fpm. Drum capacity is 360 ft. of 1⁄2 in. wire rope.

The YC-48 has a 101 ft. reach, through a three-section hydraulic boom. Boom sequencing is automatic.

The makers are Link-Belt Speeder Division, FMC Corporation, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA.

Stow Manufacturing Co., Shear Street, Binghampton, New York, are producing a new 4 h.p. pan- type tamper, the model T-403.

It is powered by a 4 h.p. Briggs & Stratton engine and produces 1,945 lb. of impact 4,800 times a minute. The 165 lb. unit has a 161⁄2 x 17 in. pan with an optional water tank assembly for use on asphalt.

The eccentric assembly is a com- pletely enclosed oil bath type which reduces maintenance. Oil in the eccen- tric assembly can be changed without disassembling the machine.

Other features of the T-403 include a shock-mounted reversible handle, centrifugal clutch, recoil starter, moulding edges for use on asphalt and an optional two-wheel cart for ease of transport.

EXCAVATOR

the

Rubber-tyred and crawler models of a new hydraulic excavator 3960 are made by International Harvester Co., 401 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Ill., USA.

On tracks, it is hydrostatically driven and has a separate hydraulic motor with individual control of each track. The crawler-type tracks can re- verse instantly and independently for counter rotation, or spot pivot under full load.

The final drive is a completely en- closed oil bath double reduction gear box, with a large hydrostatic piston motor operating through the gear box and into the sprocket drive. There are no external drive chains.

Tracks have a positive automatic lock to prevent creeping for maximum safety, performance and productivity. Good flotation and all-around sealing permits the unit to work in marshy conditions up to three-feet in water. The heavy-duty, 460 mm. 18-inch high-clearance undercarriage is cleanly- designed without obstructions on a single-welded, stress-relieved, torsion- free frame.

Track tension is hydraulic. Should a rock or other obstruction get into the track system, a heavy-duty coil spring automatically cushions tension to maintain the setting. Tracks are ad- justable through addition of grease. Ground pressure ranges from 245 gr/cm2 3.5 to 465 gr/cm2 6.6 psi,
