the blocks. On the 'external' walls, reinforced concrete vertical fins be tween the metal windows give shading from the sun.

The classroom blocks are of rein- forced concrete frame and panel con- struction. Normal plaster is used as the interior finish for classroom walls to keep down building costs, but areas where greater protection is needed, such as corridors and staircases, are finished in washed grano.

All teaching classroom floors have been given a screeding of lightweight concrete which has proved to be a very effective acoustic treatment, allowing students to enjoy lectures without a disturbing noise from the next floor.

Externally brown glass mosaics are used on the facade panels and sun breakers. Being self-cleaning, the mosaics will help reduce maintenance costs. They also provide an attractive contrast to the white plaster cement paint used on end walls and mullions.

ed, with direct open connection to the assembly hall. At ground level on the left of this hall is the school library, which is thus placed as far as possible from the workshops, and on the right are the administrative offices.

A feature of the entry hall is a large panel briefly describing in Chinese characters the biography of Lo-pan, the greatest of Chinese master build- ers. The characters of the script were written by a 90-year old scholar, Mr. Kong Dep-Wan.

Assembly hall

A portal frame design, left fair- face, was adopted for the two-storey assembly hall. This reduced costs and allowed an internal area of 80ft. by 60ft. free from column supports. The hall, which doubles as a gymnasium, has a plywood panelled dado up to door height and an acoustic tile lining above the dado and covering the entire ceiling. The flooring is hydraulically pressed cement-wood floor tiles which are said to have a life of 20 years.

No fans or air-conditioning ducts are to be seen in the hall, yet it has an excellent mechanical ventilation sys- tem that gives comfort to an audience even with the windows closed. The stage is built as a cantilever, beneath which is a grille opening. Air is drawn from below the hall the covered playground area - flows through the interior and is extracted through ceiling grilles by ventilators hidden beneath the roof.
