mixed with water in ratios suitable for the earth composition at the location.

An ONS pile is then hoisted by crane and in- serted into the hole with its flat surface contacting the guide timber which is set at the required depth. The pile descends by gravity.

Drilling is then proceeded with by attaching the casing to the concave surface of the preceding pile, and the process is repeated to form a column strip cofferdam sheathing.

By this sytem perpendicular accuracy is said to be within 1/200. Joints between piles are overlap- ped and filled with soil cement so that perfect

watertightness is ensured. The auger equipment can drill 68 - 80 m2 a day.

As the piles are of high strength and the bottom of the pile hole is well consolidated with soil cement, the first floor of a building can be con- structed prior to excavation. The sheathing will bear the load while underground and surface con- struction works are performed simultaneously. It may also be used as a permanent basement outer wall.
