from the treated spot on the surface, via a channel in an interchangeable carbide tipped bush-hammer, into a suction head and from there through a hose leading to a dust collector.

The rig is equipped with a slightly modified rock drill BDD 121H, which

is mounted on a sturdy beam by means of two tie rods. The movable beam runs between rollers in a bracket which is welded on a tube swivelling in the stand. The operator can raise and lower the rock drill, move the beam horizontally up to a radius of 2 metres from the pivot of the stand and turn it through 360 degrees.

Working pressure can be adjusted by a compessed air regulator. An ex- haust hose connected to the machine works as a silencer.

LIFTING UNIT

The Mata-Lift materials lifting machine is capable of lifting a 2-ton load to a height of 42 ft. and project- ing it forward by 15 ft. The load is carried on a fork-stacking unit placed immediately in front of the chassis.

Transmission, steering and all ser- vices are hydraulic, giving four-wheel

drive through four hydraulic hub motors built into the wheels. Two- wheel drive can be selected and the machine can be inched backwards or forwards to ensure accurate load de-

livery. The stacking unit can be tilted 10 degrees backwards or forwards and the fork carrier can be tilted 5 degrees laterally in either direction.

A six-cylinder diesel engine generat- ing 89.5 bph at 2500 rpm gives the Mata-Lift a top speed of 8 mph in for ward and reverse gears and enables it to negotiate gradients of up to 1 in 4. The turning circle is 35 ft.

The machine is fitted with a 13ft. stack unit as standard and various at- tachments are supplied to increase the machine's versatility. These include a working platform, an extension jib, timber grabs, an attachment for lifting large panels and a concrete skip with a large platform for pouring concrete in situ at a height of 42 ft.

The makers are Matatina, Ltd., 17 North Street, Newcastle, UK.

ROTARY RIG

Designed for blast-hole drilling with rotary bits in soft and medium hard types of rock, the Atlas Copco SP 10 rig is a one-man unit which is quickly set up for a wide range of drill- ing speeds.

All controls for driving and drilling are within easy reach of the operator's seat, and coupling and uncoupling of the drill rods is fully mechanised.

The drilling platform is mounted on a powered slewing rig with 180

degree rotation. This permits drilling near the bench edge, while the chassis remains at a safe distance. Heavy duty hydraulic levelling jacks are fitted at each corner of the platform.

There is a choice of two types of chassis: rubber tyres or crawler tracks. The wheeled model has hydraulic four wheel drive and a four-speed gearbox giving it a range of torque outputs and

engine speeds for hill climbing.

The makers are Atlas Copco AB, S-105 23 Stockholm, Sweden.

LOADER

An articulated wheel loader with a lift capacity of 7,000 lb. has been in- troduced by Allis-Chalmers, PO Box 512, Milwaukee, Wis, USA.

Designed for excavating and bulk material handling, the loader the 840 articulates 40 degrees right or left to facilitate load spotting and

dumping. Torque proportioning dif- ferentials automatically transfer trac- tion to the wheel on the firmer foot- ing.The 840 is powered by a 248 cu.in. displacement direct injection diesel that delivers 83 net flywheel horse- power at 2500 rpm.

A three-speed power-shift trans- mission permits clutchless shifting up or down while operating in the 0-20 mph range. The machine utilises a brake-operated transmission discon- nect to divert all engine power to load- er hydraulics when needed. The trans- mission re-engages when brakes are released. Brakes and accelerator may be used simultaneously for inching.

A dual 30 gpm hydraulic system is fitted for the loader operation and a 12.5 gpm system for the hydrostatic power steering and brakes. Standard bucket capacity is 1 cu.yd.

HOVER-PALLET

Heavy loads can be transported easily over difficult terrain, including very soft ground, on a pedestrian- controlled hover-pallet developed by Light Hovercraft, East Grinstead, UK.

The pallet will carry up to 1,000 lb. on its 4ft. wide by 8ft. long plat- form. It floats over the ground on a cushion of air supplied by a petrol- engine drive fan mounted at one end. The fan is the only moving part, giving the engine an easy task and long life.

The platform is of laminated 2in. thick plywood with a polystyrene inner core, mahogany edging and polyurethane-varnish finish.
