The hexagonal bays on the north of the site contain the mixing and baking areas, and face Castle Peak Road so that passers-by can watch the baking operation. Additional bays can be built in front of this area to take the second production unit.

The area in the centre of the hexa- gons was originally planned as a garden. oasis, but during construction was con- verted into storage space, making the total building area 24.626 sq.ft. and the total volume 503,636 cu.ft.

Structure

Having decided on a hexagonal shape plan, the designers studied several types of structure to weigh their structural suitability and their architectural merits. Finally, a precast concrete space frame was selected as the most advantageous solution at a favourable cost.

With this system, each of the seven hexagonal shape roofs behaves as an independent unit, spanning 73 ft. dia- gonally between columns. The struc tural components of each roof are 24
