PUMP

High-lift, Solids Handling Unit

A SOLIDS handling pump, known as the Sykes UV CWG 5/4 Univac. designed for pumping sand, gravel and slurries has been produced by Henry Sykes Ltd.. Univac House, Southwark Street, London, S.E.1.

This horizontal spindle centrifugal pump with separate air handling equipment, has 6 in. suction and 4 in. delivery branches and is capable of delivering 900 Imperial gal min. against a total head of 100 ft. at a pump speed of 1,000 rev min, and 1.000 Imperial gal/min. against a total head of 300 ft. when running at 1,800 rev min.

The unit will prime in 50 sec. on a 28 ft. suction lift. It is powered by a Rolls-Royce SF65C diesel engine which develops 83 b.h.p. at 1.000 r.p.m., and 144 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m.. the rating being selected to match pump requirements.

Driven from the pump shaft is a vee rope driven vacuum pump which is connected to primary and second- ary air handling chambers which are located on the suction side of the pump, above the pump centre line. Ball valves and automatic governors prevent the water level in the primary tank from rising beyond a preset level and protect the vacuum pump.

A manually operated air cock is provided to enable the vacuum to be broken, allowing a rapid flow of water back down the suction pipe to clear a blocked suction or sluice out ર sump.

air-cooled compressors, Nos. BT4, 5 and 6, with capacities of 141, 212 and 282 c.f.m. at a pressure of 100 p.s.i.. have been introduced into the Atlas Copco range.

Compact in design, they need no foundations, and can be raised from

floor to floor during multi-storey con- struction. Vibration has been reduc- ed to a minimum.

The smallest model. BT4, which measures 50 in. by 37 in. by 38 in. high. has a flanged-on electric motor. Each of the two larger models with lengths of 61 and 69 in. both being 37 in. wide and 43 in. high directly coupled to its motor and is mounted with it on a common base frame, standing on vibration-damping rubber feet.

IS

All are self-acting, two-stage ma- chines, fitted with fan-cooled inter- coolers and a venturi suction silencer. Crankcases, cylinders and cylinder heads are of cast iron, pistons of light metal alloy, and connecting rods and crankshaft of drop-forged manganese steel. Annular valves give large flow areas despite low lift, and each ma- chine has an automatic valve unload- ing system,

LOADING SHOVEL

Hydraulic Machine with Rear-wheel Drive

A HYDRAULIC loading shovel, the 22HB, developed by F. E. Weatherill Ltd., Welwyn Garden City, Herts..

UK. has rear wheel drive and carries a one ton payload.

It is powered by a Ford Major three-cylinder diesel engine develop- ing 53.5 b.h.p. The standard scoop has a % cu. yd. capacity.

Maximum dumping height is 9 ft.. top load-over height is 10 ft. 6 in.. and maximun lift-to-carry position is 6.832 lb. The driving cab is unusual- ly spacious and gives the operator all round visibility.

EXCAVATORS

Jib Can be Offset for Confined Working

THE 105, one of two new excava- tors by Whitlock Bros., Ltd., Great Yeldham, Essex, UK, incorporates a method of offsetting the jib whereby it is moved to the left or right of the machine and back to the centre posi- tion by removing two locking pins and using the hydraulic slewing mechanism.

Weighing 4.2 tons, the 105 can be fitted with either a Ford 3000 44 b.h.p. or the International B2275 40 h.p. diesel engine, both of which have eight forward and two reverse gears.

Twin independent stabilisers give stability on 10-degree slopes and permit excavation of vertical walled trenches to a depth of 11 ft. 3 in. The jib has a reach of 14 ft. from the slew post and a load-over height of 8 ft. 9 in.

The front-mounted loader, fitted with a 60 in.. 3⁄41⁄44 cu, yd. bucket, has a forward reach of 5 ft. 2 in. and a ma- ximum discharge height of 9 ft. 9 in.

The second Whitlock machine, the 505, may be set hydraulically in any of five working positions. It is pow- ered by a Ford 65 b.h.p. diesel unit and carries out digging, slewing and lifting

simultaneously without losing power or speed.

movements

The excavator bucket has a maxi- mum digging depth of 13 ft. 6 in. and a reach from the slew axis of 17 ft. 3 in. The 505 has a maximum operat- ing height of 14 ft. 6 in., a discharge height of 11 ft, and a forward reach of 5 ft. 4 in.
