Services

The hospital is served throughout by piped medical gases, normal and emergency lighting, hot and cold water. comprehensive communica- tions and staff location systems and piped steam for sterilisers.

Almost the entire technical box is air conditioned, as is the clinical amphitheatre but only two single bed wards in each of the 20 minor wards

are air conditioned. The system is steam supplied from the oil-fired boil- ers through absorption units serving various zones within the buildings.

Electricity is obtained at 33KV from the National Electricity Board and broken down through a series of

transformers into the low tension distribution system. A diesel standby generator copes with the emergency lighting and power supplies.

Mains water is supplied by the Water Department to one 100,000 gallon storage tank at the site bound- ary, one 50,000 gallon storage tank with booster pumps in the services building, pumping a supply to the main water storage tank on the top of the tower block from where it is distributed by gravity.

Malaya in 1961 recommended the early establishment of a new medical school to overcome the shortage. This recommendation was accepted by the Government of Malaysia and the necessary capital costs were provided through the Ministries of Health and Education.

The Dean of Medicine took office in early 1963, but prior to this as Dean designate he held continuous discussions, which have extended ever since, with the architects, who were appointed in October 1962 and pre- pared a master plan of the total de- velopment together with a phased pro- gramme for the faculty of medicine and the teaching hospital.
