Land Rover conversion showing generator near rear wheel
GENERATOR
Kit for Installing in Any Land Rover
A COMPACT generator is being marketed by English Electric Co., Ltd., Strand, London, W.C.2, for in- stallation into the Land Rover.
Its 17 kVA output is sufficient un- der all conditions to permit the simul- taneous use of hand tools for drill- ing, pumping, sawing, cutting and grinding and the operation of flood- lights, welding and other equipment.
The tools and generating system operate at a frequency of 500 c.p.s. (eight times normal mains frequency), and the power-to-weight ratio of the tools is considerably reduced.
The generator, associated controls and connection equipment will be sold as a kit of parts suitable for any model Land Rover. No structural modifications are necessary, and the work is well within the scope of the average workshop.
The generator itself does not rotate while the vehicle is in mo- tion, and its maintenance-free life is 3,000 hours.
English Electric representatives in- clude: Harrisons, Lister Engineering, Ltd., Penang; B.R.N. Murray, P.Ö. Box 826, Hong Kong; and S.K. Cheong, of English Electric, Singa- pore (for Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia).
TRAILER
Fitted with Hydraulic Shock Absorbers
A TWO-WHEEL trailer has been de- signed by Brockhouse Vehicles Divi- sion, West Bromwich, UK, for at- tachment to the Land Rover and to follow it over any terrain.
The trailer incorporates a progres- sive suspension combining semi- elliptic springs with hollow rubber springs, the former produced from
Far East Architect & Builder June, 1965
silico-manganese steel with rubber bushed eyes.
The unit is also fitted with telescopic hydraulic shock ab- sorbers and rebound check straps.
The all-steel body, reinforced by steel angle pillars, is fitted to a sturdy, hot-rolled angle frame and a solid, straight-through axle bed is employ- ed, this carrying Brockhouse drop forged hubs on taper roller bearings. The pressed steel disc wheels with 6.00 x 16 truck tyres are interchange- able with those on the Land Rover, For braking, the vehicle employs combined overr'in and parking sys- tem with fully compensated rod con- nection to brake assemblies via a
centre-pull mechanism.

Rated capacities for towing over long periods are 15 cwt. on roads and 10 cwt. on rough tracks.

CRANE
Crawler-mounted with Booms up to 200 ft.
A LIFTING crane with a 100-ton capacity, the LS-418 made by Link- Belt Speeder Co., 1201 Sixth Street, Iowa, USA, has a lightweight tubular steel boom and jib of tetrahedronal design. Basic boom length is 50 ft., with extensions in 20 and 30 ft. lengths to provide up to 200 ft. of
boom plus 60 ft. of jib. The crane is mounted on a wide lower with 14 ft. gauge and 19 ft. 5 in. overall length. Track shoes, 38 in. wide and power steering are standard.
Steering and digging brakes are automatically spring applied for positive control. There is a separate power flow for each function which may be performed independently or in combination. In addition
the superstructure offers an independent boom hoist, power load lowering on either or both main drums, indepen- dent swing and travel and an inde- pendent third drum.
The machine is capable of strip- ping its own major components within two hours for high- way travel: the counterweight is removed by а special cable lower- ing device powered off the rear drum shaft. It is conver- tible to dragline, clamshell or ex- cavator with 24 cu. yd. bucket.
Link-Belt repre- sentatives are: U.S. Industries Phil., Inc., Manila; American Trading Co. Thailand, Ltd., Bangkok; Acme Pacific Corporation,
New
York (for
LS-418 Crane
Taiwan); and American International Equipment Co. Inc., San Francisco (for Korea).
TRACTOR SHOVEL
134 h.p. Machine is Air Cooled
RECENTLY designed by French com- pany, Societe Benoto, the CH/Y 600 tractor shovel has twin driving axles. It is powered by a Dieselair 120 engine with an SAE rating of 160 h.p., giving a useful flywheel power output of 134 h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m. The engine is air cooled.
Transmission is via a servo-trans- mission with two forward and reverse speeds, offering two 'road' and 'job site' utilization ranges, associated to a hydraulic torque converter. The back axle differential is automatically re- leased for the road range of gear ratios. The machine has a top speed of 38 k.p.h. on the road.
ar-
The four driving wheels are ranged on two axles: a front fixed driving axle and a rear driving and steering axle oscillating through 18° (between -9° and -9°). An epicy- clic reduction gear is mounted in the wheel hubs and the wheels themselves are equipped with large-diameter tyres, 1800-25.
The steering is hydraulically as- sisted and the turning radii are very small: 6.370m for the outer radius to the corner of the shovel, and 3.090m for the inner radius to the front wheel.
