Some of the existing and well- established trees have been preserved and, with supplemented planting of shrubs and turfing, the greenery so precious to urban areas has been provided and a mature appearance for the estate has been achieved.

Ground floor shops and a piazza- like forecourt dotted with trees and benches, covered and open play spaces with children's play equip- ment, the paving and footpath have all helped to bring about a human scale on the ground level, while the pattern of the layout of the open space has been designed to give some variety and visual interest for the residents living high up in the standardized dwelling units.

Economic Construction

Ma Tau Wai is the seventh estate to be built by the Housing Authority and the first to be completed in the second decade of the authority's exis- tence.

Created in 1954, the authority has approved schemes that will provide housing for a total of 186,180 people in 29,916 flats at a capital cost of HK$287 million
