PHYSIC EXTENSION-PHASE III AND LECTURE THEATRE No. 1
A
RAPID programme of building de- velopment is being undertaken at the University of Singapore to meet the increasing demand for stu- dent places.
Among buildings recently com- pleted is a new physic extension block
part of a three-phase development scheme a lecture theatre (No. 1) and a science tower which together with the existing physic block and three other lecture theatres complete the plan for the north west section of the quadrangle.

The extension, being part of the ex- isting block, was designed to be similar in character. However, the in- ternal planning of the extension is de- signed on the maximum flexible use

of the floor. The composition of the department is bound to change as will the requirements of accomoda- tion. A framed structure is used with main services easily accessible so that individual floors of the building can be re-planned as required.
As the extension is built on part of the existing Eu Tong San Hall, a part of the building had to the demolished. For the extension, reinforced concrete piles varying from 50 ft. to 80 ft. in length, each carrying 40 to 45 tons

are used. The piles were driven by jacking in order to reduce disturbance to the surrounding buildings.
The lower ground floor is used pri- marily as workshops for welding, metal work and spectroscopic re- search. Access to the ground floor is from the existing stair of the physic block and the new stair at the ex- treme end of the new block.
