and photo finish rooms. It connects directly to the ground floor with a special lift.

Other Areas

At the west end of the grandstand, other circulation networks comprise jockeys' facilities, stabling and sad- dling area, all leading to the track via the parade ring.

The layout of the neighbourhood environment for the large numbers of permanent staff and their families requires reasonable access to the working areas, while still maintaining desirable separation from the stables.

Over the whole site, special con- sideration has been given to the location of access roads, car parks and bus stops. Strict north-south orientation is provided to all build- ings, to encourage good natural cross ventilation in the hot and humid climate.

Social and cultural traditions were especially important in the housing areas where life still centres around the family unit, though always in close proximity to other families. To provide maximum space and cross ventilation between groups of houses on the rather limited site, building groups were limited to 16 units and each was designed with communal service courts and storage facilities between.

These groups were then laid out around large open spaces which con- tain a Muslim prayer room, a fenced- in play area for children, gardens. shaded sitting spaces and areas for communal eating stalls.

The main structure of the grand- stand is reinforced concrete used in a variety of ways, i.e. in situ, precast. prestressed and post-tensioned. The

grandstand will be 750 ft. long and the structural span of each truss will exceed 180 ft.

Framework

Main frames each consist of two hollow service columns supporting balanced cantilever beams. The roof is made up of U-shaped precast con- crete planks, spanning between these beams, and the intermediate floor systems are of similar construction, Materials generally will be used with a natural finish and selected Malay- sian timbers will be used for all joinery and furniture.

Two central refrigeration plants will provide chilled water for circula- tion to the areas to be air conditioned. Mechanical ventilation of the grand- stand on still days will be achieved by distributing air from side wall registers in ductwork located under the VIP boxes.
