Utzon Discusses Opera House Disagreement
Danisi architect. Joern Utzon said last month he could not imagine how others could complete the work of building the Sydney Opera House, which he designed. He resigned recently because of differences with the New South Wales Government over his future role in the project.
In an interview published in a Danish newspaper. Mr. Utzon said he would return to Sydney immediately if the Government reversed their decision and offered him a free hand to complete the opera house.
Speaking after receiving a plaque of honour from the West German Architects' Federation for his design of the building, he said the New South Wales Minister of Public Works, Mr. David Hughes, was naive in believing he could complete the project successfully with new architects. "They may be fabulously skilled but only I can imagine how it must all be it is such a personal work of art.” he added.
The Danish architect complained that he had been unjustly charged with not keeping economic matters in order. He said he did not have any economic respon- sibility and that those who made the first calculations simply had no possibility of making a reasonable estimate of the cost because the project was different from anything else.
He said it was important to note that he had had only one letter from his clients on the Opera House, and this said: "Create the most beautiful building in the world.” He added: "I never was subjected to a cost limit or a fixed date for completion of the project.”
