BANGKOK MULTI-LEVEL SYSTEM

THE Director of Public Works, Bangkok Municipality. Udom Srisaovachart, has announced that design calcula- tions are being prepared for a multi-level traffic system to be built at the Yomaraj railway crossing. Petchburi Road,

It will consist of a flyover above the railway cross- ing and the existing road at ground level, and a tunnel under the railway lines. It is designed to channel traffic into the three main roads branching off the end of Petch- buri Road--Lanluang. Sawankhalok and Pisanulok Roads.

BANK BEING DEMOLISHED

ONE of the few remaining pre-war buildings in Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong the Kai Ming Building, head office of the Shanghai Commercial Bank, Ltd. 15 being demolished. It will be replaced by a 14-storey office block.

-

Expected to be ready by July next year, the new block will be column-free. Rib joist floors spanning the full width of the building will be supported by load bear- ing walls to give flexible floor space and beam-free ceilings.

The Queen's Road frontage will be clad in blue polished granite and the entrance to the bank, which will be accommodated in the new building, will be emphasis- ed by recessed lighting projected from a canopy at mez- zanine floor level. Architect for the new building is Eric Cumine (Job architect: Mr. Jacob Wong).

WANCHAI FLYOVER

As a first stage of the system for handling traffic move- ment to and from the entrance to the proposed cross- harbour tunnel, a flyover is to be built over Gloucester Road in Wanchai, Hong Kong. The approach ramp will start in Fleming Road near its junction with Jaffe Road.

The Government announced last month proposals for altering Fleming Road to build the approach ramp. Glou- cester Road is also to be widened as part of the scheme. A Government spokesman stated that cars using the ramp would be able to proceed to the new ferry concourse in the Wanchai reclamation or approach the cross-harbour tunnel without interfering with traffic in Gloucester Road.

MODERN CAR SHOWROOM

An unusual lighting installation is a feature of a new car show- room opened last month at Embassy Court, Hysan Avenue, Hong Kong, by the Zung Fu Co. It consists of fluorescent strips set below an aluminium tiled ceiling, the strips being boxed by teak plywood edges.

Mahogony plywood panels are used for the wall cladding and the floor is covered in Chinese-made terrazzo tiles. Archi- tect for the showroom is Mr. B. Penman, of Eric Cumine.
