HOUSING BOARD'S BUDGET
A CAPITAL expenditure of M$54.5 million is earmarked this year by the Singapore Housing and Development Board for land acquisition and building programmes. The board's total expenditure for the year is budgeted at M$106 million.
Among the major items are $23.7 million for part repayment of loans from the Government, and $15 mil- lion for rates, conservancy and service charges. Of the capital expenditure, the Toa Payoh satellite town deve- lopment will receive $22 million. About $15 million was spent on developing the township last year.
The Kallang industrial site will near completion this year and is allotted $7 million. Among the land to be acquired are sites in Toa Payoh ($4 million) and Duman Road ($5 million).
Token sums of $10 each have been entered in the budget for land acquisitions in Henderson Road, Tiong Bahru fire site. Telok Blangah New Town, Jurong New Town neighbourhood one, Queenstown cemeteries, and Alexandra and Tiong Bahru Road. These sites are need- ed for building houses, schools, markets and shops and for redevelopment.
Kampong Bahru fire site will see further housing development, as $8.5 million is allocated to the project. Among other new work to be started are Queenstown cemeteries ($2 million), Changi Road estates ($2 million) and MacPherson Road (South) extension ($1 million).

The administrative expenses of the board have been steadily increasing since 1963, when the actual expendi- ture was $823,515. In 1964, the expenditure was $980,- 561. According to revised estimates for 1965, the ex- penditure was $1,154,975, and this year $1,262,145.
The board expects an income this year of $51.6 million of which $37.4 million is from rent on its pro- perties.
START SOON ON KL PROJECTS
WORK ON a M$1.5 million hawkers emporium and a multi-storey car park in Kuala Lumpur will begin this year.
Deputy Municipal Health Officer, Dr. T. Visvana- than announced last month that the $1 million site of the wholesale market in Jalan Sekolah would be converted into a bus terminal with a multi-storey car park and pro- vision for food stalls.
The three-storey hawkers' emporium at Jalan Haji Hussein would cost $M300,000. There would be 91 covered lock-up pitches and 132 open air pitches. Tend- ers have been invited for both schemes.
BUILDING PLANS APPROVED
