the superstructure of the second and larger plant at Lai Chi Kok, Kow- loon. This second plant is scheduled to be in operation by the end of 1966.
Piled Foundations
The site at Lai Chi Kok is about 550 ft. long and 295 ft. wide. Re- claimed from the sea before the last war, it is almost level, having a fall of approximately 1ft. from north to south.
At the southern end of the site is an existing sea wall with a cope level of +13.00 C.D. Preliminary bore- holes showed that piled foundations would be necessary and in situ con- crete piles of up to 80 ft. length have been driven by Gammon (Hong Kong) Ltd. into decomposed granite measures. Each pile has a working load capacity of 110 tons.
Access to the site will be from a new road to be constructed by the Public Works Department adjacent to the north boundary. It will also serve a new industrial development. A service road will be constructed within the site on the east, south and west boundaries and will provide one-way traffic circulation within the area with separate entrance and exit to the access road.
Since it is necessary to provide storage bunkers into which refuse can be tipped by the collection vehicles and having regard to the high water table, it was decided that the service road be elevated to a level of +28.00 C.D. in the recep- tion house. This will minimize the problems of excavation and construc- tion of the storage bunkers.
The substructure is of in situ rein-
forced concrete and all work below ground level is in watertight cons- truction including the five refuse storage bunkers, each of which has a capacity of 500 cu. yd.
Warning Lights
The two chimneys, each 190 ft. high with an internal diameter of 12 ft., will also be constructed of rein- forced concrete with Fosalsil linings. Aircraft warning lights will be fixed to the chimneys since Lai Chi Kok lies on one of the main approach lanes to Kai Tak Airport.
The main building housing the in- cinerators, boilers, composting plant and reception house, will be cons- tructed in structural steelwork fabricated in the United Kingdom by Dorman Long (Bridge & Engineer- ing) Ltd. External cladding is to be
