Centre of the Loughborough University of Tech- nology. They are preparatory to the release early in 1971 of the programs to civil and structural en- gineers throughout the UK. The computers on trial will be the IBM 360 series, the ICL 1900 series and System 4, the Honeywell 200 series and the CDC 6600.

Charges for the use of the system have been devised by the GENESYS Board, representing Government, engineers, contractors, universities, and the computer industry. Rates generally are low, in anticipation of wide usage of the system.

An engineer will be able to gain access to the system and its library of programs and secure full technical backing services covering maintenance and debugging of programs, consultancy, and train- ing by entering into a contract and becoming a GENESYS Centre member.

There will be basically two types of member, engineers using computer bureaux and organisa- tions owning suitable computers. The full library of GENESYS programs will be available for the bureau user, the most common form of member, for an annual subscription of £ 100 plus a surcharge of 10 per cent. of the billed cost of his bureau work.

The system does not intrude between the en- gineer and his judgment but provides facilities which minimise time-consuming operations com- mon to many offices. For example, the reinforced concrete building program supplies from the en- gineers' original instructions about shape, form and loading of a building, detailed site information for steel reinforcement bending and fixing and the facility to subject the same basic problem to dif- fering examinations.

Basement excavation for Mondial House, the new £7 million inter- national telephone exchange under construction beside the Thames and next to Cannon Street Station, London, is now nearing com- pletion. The excavation measures 100m x 54m, and is to a depth of 15m below the high water level. The grid of horizontal struts now takes the full load from the river bank and the surrounding build- ings, and work has now started on construction of the 2.1m thick foundation raft. The grid will eventually form part of the permanent structure, providing beams for one of the basement floors.
