ing, the dual problems of soft loam soil and earthquake hazard had to be solved. This was done by placing the foundation at a depth of 23.79 m where Tokyo's gravel stratum is located. Some 60,000 cu. m. of soil had to be excavated at a rate of 700 cu. in. per day to lay the mat founda- tion which supports a total load of 50,000 tons or 25 tons per sq. m.
The subterranean portion of the building is divided into five basement floors which are occupied by machine rooms, three-storey parking lots for a total of 120 cars and shopping ar- cades. Total floor space is 30,565.3
cu. m.
Flexible Curtain Wall
The exterior of the new building features flexible curtain wall construc- tion of weathering high tensile A slim tower of 16 strength steel. office floors rises from the broad base of the first two storeys which cover the full 1,953.55 sq. m. building area and are occupied primarily by bank-
sur-
ing facilities. The open area rounding the base of the office tower, on the third floor, has been made in- to a public promenade deck.
All interior walls are made of sypo- lex paneling, except for the concrete walls of the bank vault and library on the first and second floors. All floor slabs are made of T-type precast con- crete plates.
The 18-storey block has six eleva- tors, three of which are high-speed systems to serve the top floors. The building is air-conditioned with a cen- tral duct system for the office floors and a fan coil system for the peri- meter zone which is controlled at each module. A zone control system is provided with regeneration tanks for the lower floors of the building.
The main equipment is located on the fifth basement floor, which also houses a transformer substation of Tokyo Electric Power Company,
Construction of the building, which has a total floor space of 30,565 sq. m., started in October 1965 and was completed in October 1967.
