The US$26 million project will, in a few years' time, be followed by a US$70 million road tunnel under the river in the eastern parts of the city.

Connecting Gothenburg proper with the expanding industrial and residential areas of Hisingen, the Alvsborg bridge has a main span of 418 m. and a navigable height of 45 m. in the central fairway. The two cable towers, rising 99 m. above water level, have been cast in concrete, by the slipform method developed by AB Byggforbattring, Stockholm. The north tower was founded on rock, 30 and 20 m. below water level, while the south tower rests on a gravel bed.

A lift in one of the tower legs leads to a public ob- servation platform on the upper transverse beam, offering a splendid view of the city and the archipelago.

A total of 35,000 cu. m. of concrete went into the construction of the bridge, including the side spans, the viaduct columns and the large gravel-filled cable anchor boxes. For aerodynamic reasons, steel trusses have been used for the stiffening and transverse girders of the sus- pended span. The bridge deck consists of 18 cm. thick concrete, composite with the steel stringers. The surface coating includes epoxy plastics.

Each main cable, 784 m. long and 56 cm. in dia- meter, is composed of 85 closed cable strands. The total weight of the cables is 2,000 tons and that of the steel structures 6,600 tons.

Steel Cladding on US Convention Centre

COR-TEN Steel decking, normally used as flooring, has been used to clad a huge community and convention centre now being erected at Fresno, California.

The steel is specially formulated to acquire a tough oxide coating when exposed to the weather, so no painting will be necessary in the future. This coating is a rich, dark brown in colour.

More than 100.000 sq. ft. of the steel sheets has been applied to the upper exterior walls of the three-building complex. Some of the walls reach a height of 100 ft.

The sheet material was supplied in deck sections 2ft. wide and from 27 ft. to 35 ft.

in length. The fluted panels are 11⁄2 in. deep. Steel bolts were used to attach the deck- ing to the steel frame of the buildings.

Robert Stevens Associates and Adrian Wilson and As- sociates are the architects for the centre. The general con- tractors are Huber, Hunt and Nichols, and the steels panels were fabricated by H. H. Robertson Co.
